Upcoming Events:

Join us for an engaging discussion on the Poetics of Treaties project by Māori legal academic Carwyn Jones and Pākehā/settler-English professor Nikki Hessell, hosted by the Indigenous Law Centre, College of Law, USask.

Topic: Poetics of Treaties
For centuries, Indigenous peoples have viewed treaty-making as an art form, one that weaves together politics, poetry, storytelling, and song. This perspective offers a deeper understanding of treaties beyond their recognition as solely legal agreements, highlighting the relationships, creativity, and lived experiences embedded within treaty-making.

With:
Carwyn Jones
Māori legal academic from the Ngāti Kahungunu people who leads the Ahunga Tikanga (Māori Laws and Philosophy) programme at Te Wānanga o Raukawa, a Māori centre of higher learning in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Nikki Hessell

This event is free and open to the public, please share this with your networks and invite anyone who may be interested in the Poetics of Treaties project.

During the summer we will have opportunities for our network and public to come to help and learn about our medicine garden. Dates vary depending on the weather, but we generally like to provide a few days notice. We will be posting dates and more information on our social media pages (Facebook and Instagram) and on this event page.

We have gardening tools available, so you would mainly just need to bring yourself, wear appropriate attire for gardening and the weather, and be ready to help/learn.

You can also be added to our garden's volunteer email list by emailing ilc.general@usask.ca.  All are welcome.

Lunch & Learn, Series

Our Lunch & Learn series is an ongoing, Indigenous-centred learning initiative that creates space for students to engage with lawyers and knowledge holders working across diverse areas of law. The sessions explore legal topics through perspectives that recognize Indigenous rights, laws, and lived experiences, while connecting theory to real-world practice. Designed to support student learning and professional growth, the series also welcomes members of the public interested in deepening their understanding of law in an inclusive and respectful setting.

Every 2nd Wednesday of the month (Except December & April due to exams, or scheduling conflicts)

The Way of Story, Series

This series recognizes storytelling as a vital form of legal education, communicating Indigenous laws as living practices rooted in relationships among people, land, and all beings. Through this series, we welcome Indigenous storytellers who share stories that carry legal teachings, responsibilities, and ways of understanding law grounded in Indigenous legal traditions.
