Duck (Re)

The Provincial Court of Manitoba released a decision on September 16, 2014 in Duck (Re) , granting the Government of Canada an order sought to change the venue of the Inquest into the Death of Mr. Paul Duck to Winnipeg for the purpose of hearing the testimony of Cst. Steele who fatally shot Mr. Duck at God's Lake Narrows, Manitoba in March 2011.

Although to date the Inquest has been held in the remote community of God's Lake Narrows and Mr. Duck's family and community members have attended the hearings, the Government of Canada sought to have Cst. Steel's testimony heard elsewhere on the advice of the Cst. Steele's medical advisor that he suffered from a serious psychological injury and returning to God's Lake Narrows "could have dire consequences for his life and health". In granting Canada's request the Court also held appropriate arrangements must be made to accommodate for the attendance of Mr. Duck's immediate family during this testimony, as well as arrangements for public viewing of a video recording of the testimony at the community hall of the God's Lake Narrows First Nation.
